'He loved three things, alive:'

by Anna Akhmatova

'He loved three things, alive:'

  He loved three things, alive:

  White peacocks, songs at eve,

  And antique maps of America.

  Hated when children cried,

  And raspberry jam with tea,

  And feminine hysteria.

  …And he had married me.
