Late To Smile

When Miranda’s controlling mother dies, she feels an enormous sense of freedom and release. Having spent her life in the shadows of others, it is only a tragedy that opens up a world of new possibility for her.

Reviews

Seven-year-old Juan lives in Guatemala, a place of stunning beauty and grim economic reality. Abandoned by his mother, Juan lives with his grandmother and shines shoes. He passionately wants to attend school, but fears Grandmother will say no. Finally gathering his courage, he is surprised when she not only agrees to send him to school but also chides him about the importance of standing up for himself. Juan tells this bittersweet story, which reads smoothly and powerfully on several levels, with warmth and dignity.

A sensitive, beautifully written story celebrating heroism and loyalty

As I read The Incredible Journey I felt as if I were traveling along with a Labrador, bull terrier and a Siamese cat through the Canadian wilderness.
When the animals got lost from home, they suffered through hunger, freezing weather, Indians and ferocious animals. After many struggles and separations, the animals found their way home to the loving arms of their owners. I enjoyed the adventure these animals took me on in this incredible story.
