The Tale of One Bad Rat

Winner of the Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album Reprint, The Tale of One Bad Rat is the story of a young girl, Helen Potter, who runs away from home to escape an uncaring mother and a sexually abusive father. Eventually she finds her way to the Lake District, drawn there by her love of the work of Beatrix Potter, and in that beautiful landscape she at last finds peace.

Reviews

'It would be easy to simply categorise The Tale of One Bad Rat as a fine fiction about overcoming the effects of abuse. And it is that, but it is more than that: it's a lovingly crafted story about, in the end, the meaning and value of fiction and art, about what we take from the past, and what we bring to the future. With it, Bryan Talbot moves into the front rank of writer/artists.'

—— Neil Gaiman

An ingenious, intertextual narrative that interweaves the charming, whimsical and, above all, the English vision of Beatrix Potter with a vision of England as it has become; the soft juxtaposed with the savage; Peter Rabbit lost in Cardboard City. Thoroughly excellent.

—— Alan Moore

In its ambition, framing, and multiple layers, [Passing for Human] raises the bar for graphic narrative. Even fans of [Liana Finck’s] work in the New Yorker will be blindsided by this outstanding book.

—— Kirkus Review

A beautiful, fictionalised memoir combines intelligence and appealingly scratchy artwork with serious soul-searching.

—— Guardian, 50 of the Biggest Books to Look Out For in Autumn 2018

A sure hit for readers of graphic memoirs.

—— Booklist

Passing for Human is a bildungsroman of sorts, laying out all the decisive moments that have made Finck who she is now… simultaneously odd and precise.

—— Sian Cain , Guardian

In this elegant graphic memoir of being the odd woman out... Finck’s whimsy acts as a microscope to better understand family, romance, and isolation... Becoming human is a lifelong task—but Finck illustrates it with humor and panache.

—— Publishers Weekly

[A] compelling memoir…Passing for Human, proves creativity and mental health through a mix of frank self-analysis and rich, fable-like storytelling. It’s a fine account of how the mind can soar even as doubt roars in the ears.

—— James Smart , Guardian, **Books of the Year**

[Posy Simmonds] is back with a new anti-heroine… [and] jewel-sharp illustrations.

—— Claire Armitstead , Guardian

Posy Simmonds is the mother of the British graphic novel… The end [of Cassandra Darke] is startlingly poignant, and like all good satire it has a quiet reflection on human mortality at its heart.

—— Lucy Lethbridge , Tablet

What a huge treat awaits the readers of this book… [Cassandra Darke] makes one pause in awe to consider the sheet amount of wit, invention, insight, observation, skill, dedication and care that has been distilled into this 94 pages.

—— Matthew Sturgis , The Oldie

In Simmonds's latest nuanced, warm-hearted satire a heartless art dealer makes a discovery that pushes her out of grim rut and into a dark quest.

—— Guardian, 50 of the Biggest Books to Look Out For in Autumn 2018

Simmonds is a copper-bottomed genius, I have absolutely no idea why she isn't a baroness.

—— Jenny Colgan , UK Press Syndication

Festive-season glitter and grimness mingle in this handsome Christmas book.

—— Peter Kemp , Sunday Times, **Books of the Year**

Simmonds offers a sharp portrait of a polarised London.

—— James Smart , Guardian, **Books of the Year**

A page-turning graphic novel… sharp, witty, deliciously observant and so exquisitely drawn it took my breath away. The perfect book for Christmas.

—— Jonathan Pugh , Daily Mail

The visual and moral chiaroscuro of the novel, and its unflinching depiction of pathos and loneliness in the most and least privileged of social milieus, make it a strong contender, if not for the meretricious glitter of literary awards, then for the more lasting prize of inclusion in the canon of comic-strip masterpieces.

—— Jane Shilling , Prospect

Posy Simmonds’s…line and way of telling a story are equally deft.

—— Evening Standard, *Summer Reads of 2019*
