Before the Dawn

A gripping police procedural, Before the Dawn sees Inspector Jaap Rykel of Amsterdam's Murder Squad drawn into a case which may destroy him . . .

On a small Dutch island a body is found.

The victim's head is wrapped in cling film.

Her hands are tied behind her back.

Veteran detective Inspector Jaap Rykel of Amsterdam's Murder Squad is swiftly summoned and he soon identifies a suspect, who hands himself over. Yet the man has no history of violence, no motive, and no connection to the victim.

On the other side of Holland, a similar murder - and confession - is reported and Rykel wonders if these are random senseless acts, or something more mysterious.

Seeking patterns no one wants to see, Rykel is drawn deeper into a sinister, sprawling case which will destroy all who touch it . . .

Praise for Jake Woodhouse:

'A strong sense of place matched by storytelling that keeps the plot accelerating' Daily Mail

'Utterly enthralling ... Looks set to be one of the key sequences in modern crime fiction' Barry Forshaw, Crimetime

'Taut, expertly woven and beautifully written' Craig Robertson

Reviews

A gripping police procedural, After the Silence sees Inspector Jaap Rykel of Amsterdam's Murder Squad drawn into a case which may destroy him . . .

—— from the publisher's description

This gripping detective novel will thrill fans of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and bears comparison to Fatherland ... Utterly unputdownable

—— Sun

Taut, expertly woven and beautifully written ... in Inspector Jaap Rykel, Woodhouse has created a flawed gem

—— Craig Robertson

A strong sense of place is matched by a capacity for storytelling that keeps the plot accelerating

—— Daily Mail

Utterly enthralling ... looks set to be one of the key sequences in modern crime fiction

—— Barry Forshaw, Crimetime

After the Silence is as dark and twisty as the Amsterdam it navigates and Rykel a fascinating and original protagonist. A promising start to what could be a great series

—— Stav Sherez, author of A Dark Redemption

Reacher is a former Army M.P. who thinks like a knight but looks like a drifter. He stops to right wrongs...then moves on...There's always more for Mr Child to add to his canon of Reacher...We've heard lots about his strength but little about his physical grace. This is the book in which he eases through a crowd "like a police horse at a riot".

—— Janet Maslin , New York Times

According to Forbes, the Jack Reacher series is "the strongest brand in publishing"...As ever, Child delivers a satisfyingly complex, exciting and well-researched story...no doubt that Reacher #21 will fly off bookshop shelves worldwide.

—— Irish Independent

Rewarding and adrenalin-fuelled.

—— Sun

Her writing is stylish, the characters are vivid ... Can't recommend it highly enough

—— Rick O'Shea

Magnificent ... compulsively readable ... stunning, shock and superb

—— Frank McGuinness

"I expected more of a reaction the first time I hit her" ... The No 1 bestselling story of the making of a sociopath that has been compared to Gone Girl

—— From the Publisher's Description

Compelling, clever and dark, unlike any other psychological thriller you will have read before ... you'll gobble it up in one go

—— Heat Magazine

The compulsion to continue reading never wanes ... a persistently satisfying read.

—— Sunday Times

Truly excellent, beautifully written ... strongly recommended

—— Sophie Hannah

This is as much a whydunit as a whodunit and the reader is drawn deeper into a web of ruthless ambition, manipulation and revenge

—— The Bookbag

One of the most suspenseful and unguessable crime mysteries I have ever read.

—— United by Pop

Not only is this a clever read but it is also a well-written one. Encompassing nuances of plot, depth of character and intensity of narrative there is little to fault in the beautiful construction of this.

—— United by Pop

Fast-paced with a cast of untrustworthy characters, this is compelling suspense fiction at its finest

—— United by Pop

The Book of Mirrors is exactly what I look for in a thriller: a great concept, brilliantly executed, smarter than it seems and knotty enough to keep you guessing. Like the best stories about memory, it leaves the reader wondering what's true and what isn't.

—— James Smythe

seamless mix of literary experiment and page-turning mystery

—— Crime Scene Magazine

this is a meta-novel which possesses ripping momentum and brims with ambiguity. A high-grade mystery that’s ripe for investigation.

—— Crime Scene Magazine

Intrigue, confusion, and considerable fact distortion reign supreme in the extreme trial by memory presented by The Book of Mirrors

—— Little Bookness Lane

Already shrouded in hype and hysteria, The Book of Mirrors is going to be the one to watch in 2017

—— BookWormMummy

this book is going to be a 2017 smash (but don’t cut yourself on the glass) hit!

—— Keeper of Pages

An entertaining, clever story, told in an engaging manner that fits the story. I’ll be keen to read more work by EO Churovici in the future.

—— From First Page to Last

slippery murder mystery

—— Irish Independent

The Book of Mirrors is a fascinating read that shatters the bubble each character is living in. Intelligently written, the novel offers a good insight into the depth of our memories, and the stories that shape our lives

Something of a publishing sensation

—— James Lasdun , Open Book

2017 has got off to a blinding start and for all those who have books to publish later in the year: Watch Out. There’s a new guy in town and, man, is he good!

The Book of Mirrorsis a very clever and well written novel

It keeps you guessing right to the last page and, even afterwards, leaves you wondering how much of what we accept as reality exists only in our own minds

This is an interesting, well-written book with plenty of layers and depth ... E.O. Chirovici writes really well, and creates a novel which you’ll want to keep reading. It’s different and deliciously deep, drawing you in as you try to unravel the details

This intelligent multi-layered psychological thriller examines human memory, recollection, self-delusion and how memories can be manipulated. If you want to immerse yourself in a compelling ‘whodunit’, this book will not disappoint!

I couldn't put it down

—— Sunday Times (Ireland)

There’s so much to like about The Book of Mirrors. The story is clever, well-paced and well-constructed

Even the twists have twists

—— i paper

Chirovici has written a very clever book. The plot twists and turns, backtracks and goes round in circles, so you can never be quite sure where it’s going to go next.

An intriguing whydunit underpinned by a treatise on memory, as a number of witnesses create a cat’s cradle of conflicting testimony designed to keep the reader guessing to the very end

The Book of Mirrorsengages on a number of levels. Chirovici delights in leading the reader down various blind alleys and keeps us turning the pages
