Dark Winter

Outside of Pakistan, the world's highest concentration of al-Qaeda lurks in South-East Asia and there, Nick Stone¹s bosses get wind of an act of terror that will dwarf even the nightmare of 9/11.

When Stone is despatched to Malaysia by the CIA to assassinate a biochemist, he expects his mission to be a straightforward part of the fight against Bin Laden. But there are complications not least because he is working alongside an attractive woman whose motives he doesn¹t fully understand.

Target neutralised, Stone returns to the USA and a maelstrom of personal problems. Kelly, the fourteen year-old orphan to whom he is joint guardian, cannot escape the ghosts of her traumatic past; she has a prescription drug habit that's spiralling out of control, and Stone knows he is the only one who can help her. He takes her to recuperate in England, but the terrible consequences of what happened in Penang are never far behind.

Realising he cannot escape them, Stone unearths a doomsday threat against the populations of New York, London and Berlin and finds himself facing an unspeakable trade-off: the life of someone he loves, against those of millions he doesn¹t even know. . .

Reviews

Among his most stunning yet: profound and heartbreaking

—— Financial Times

A psychological thriller, a flawed love story, a study of authenticity in emotions, a commentary on America's relations with itself and the world, humanity and ecollogy... undoubtedly magnificent

—— The Times

There's no other way to say it: Richard Powers is a genius

—— Time Out

An exhilarating narrative feat... He is a formidable talent, and this is a lucid, fiercely entertaining novel

—— Sebastian Faulks , Washington Post

Richard Powers is the most intellectually stimulating novelist at work in the English language today...[He writes] luminous prose. Sentence after sentence has the razor-sharp quality of aphorism about the weird wired world we have made

—— Sunday Times

Tell No Tales is authentically grimy and politically astute

—— Selina Hastings , Mail on Sunday

Dolan’s storytelling is even better than in her first novel, Long Way Home, which was a readers’ favourite in 2014…will have you turning the pages right to the end

—— 5 Stars, Crime Fiction Lover

Tell No Tales is a powerful authentic, superbly written story, which proves that her brilliant début was no fluke. Eva Dolan is definitely the real deal

—— Howard Linskey

Tell No Tales is a gripping insight into a rarely seen and highly relevant area of policing. Eva Dolan is fast becoming one of my favourite authors.

—— Emma Kavanagh, author of Falling

Gripping, gritty and satisfying

—— CrimeReaderBlog

Fantastic... An utterly compelling crime novel that pierces the veil of social, racial and political issues in Britain today. I loved it

—— Steve Cavanagh, author of The Defence

Dolan has done it again, achieving something quite unlike the work of her contemporaries

—— Good Book Guide

Dolan writes brilliantly about the liminal existence of migrant workers and the political subplot is bang up-to-date.

—— Joan Smith , The Sunday Times

Gritty and atmospheric with well-drawn characters, Tell No Tales keeps you guessing until the end.

—— Charlotte Heathcote , Daily Express

An angry and unsparing snapshot of rootless, exploited lives.

—— Alison Graham , Radio Times

This is an addictive read.

—— Victoria Clark, 4 stars , Lady

There couldn’t be a more perfect summer read than this elegant, atmospheric, suspenseful novel

—— John Koski , Mail on Sunday

Curtain Call is a poignant and gripping story about love and death in a society dancing towards the abyss

—— MrsD-Daily

Harrowing suspense. The Bear is a survival thriller that is told from a child's-eye point-of-view, which is not only convincing but doubles the tension. A heartbreaking, white-knuckle read

—— Andrew Pyper, author of The Demonologist

Thrilling and harrowing…. I couldn’t put this book down. And I must say that the ending was so right, I caught myself holding my breath. A remarkable novel

—— Anthony de Sa, author of Kicking the Sky

Just when you thought it was safe to go into the forest... This expertly crafted novel could do for camping what Jaws did for swimming

—— People

A gripping tale of how to deal with grief and being lost in a hostile environment

—— Roddy Brooks , UK Press Syndication

Subtle, endearing and raw

—— Clare Brierley , Nudge

Based on real-life events, this book is unforgettable

A tender, terrifying, poignant ride
