Eric Ambler

BBC Radio 4 dramatisations of three of Eric Ambler’s bestselling spy thrillers, plus Nick Perry’s play The Battle of San Pietro and a bonus documentary, Ambler at 80

Eric Ambler has been hailed as ‘the father of the modern spy story’. His tense, gritty thrillers introduced a new realism to the classic espionage mystery, and influenced novelists from Graham Greene to John le Carré. This collection brings together three of his best-known novels, adapted for radio with a full cast.

Epitaph for a Spy

When Hungarian language teacher Josef Vadassy goes to collect his photographs from the chemist, he is arrested on suspicion of espionage. The roll of film contained pictures of military installations – but Vadassy knows he didn’t take them. Can he find the real spy and prove his innocence?

Journey into Fear

Istanbul, 1940. Amiable engineer and munitions expert Alec Graham has just concluded high-level arms talks with the Turkish government when someone tries to kill him. Escaping by steamer, he realises that his would-be assassin is also on board…

The Levanter

Michael Howell has kept his family's firm from nationalisation by co-operating with the new Syrian regime. But other political forces are at work in the Middle East – and Howell soon finds himself caught up in a deadly plot. This gripping tale of intrigue and double-dealing won the Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger Award.

Among the casts of these fast-paced adaptations are Edward Hogg, Daniel Rigby andRaad Rawi. Also included in this collection are The Battle of San Pietro by Nick Perry, a 45-minute play exploring Eric Ambler’s experiences shooting a wartime propaganda movie alongside John Huston, and the celebratory Radio 4 profile Ambler at 80, in which presenter Michael Barber discusses the author’s life and work.

Reviews

Unflinching but also surprisingly funny, you keep turning the pages to find out what is the bigger threat to Rykel: the murderer or his own inner demons

—— Anja de Jager

Terrifying and twisty, Jake Woodhouse's gripping, effortlessly vivid prose makes this intelligent, brilliantly plotted thriller one you will not be able to put down

—— Sam Blake, Irish Times No.1 Bestselling Author of Little Bones

This might be Jake Woodhouse's best yet. His Jaap Rykel series good from strength to strength and The Copycat embodies everything that's good about the Rykel books. Yes, it's a gripping page-turner but it also has a lot to say on important social messages, brilliantly managing to do so without slowing the pace for a second. Highly recommended.

—— Craig Robertson

Twisting, stylish and breathlessly paced. I struggled to put it down for a second

—— Chris Whitaker, CWA Dagger-winning author of Tall Oaks

Utterly enthralling . . . looks set to be one of the key sequences in modern crime fiction

—— Barry Forshaw , Crimetime

A strong sense of place is matched by a capacity for storytelling that keeps the plot accelerating

—— Daily Mail

This gripping detective novel will thrill fans of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and bears comparison to Fatherland ... Utterly unputdownable

—— Sun

This page-turning thrilller has a sympathetic and utterly believable heroine, but it's also an examination of how women's bodies are treated, in life and in fiction.

—— The Bookseller

A literary exploration of consent, entitlement and how narratives can be bent, misappropriated and wrested back. I loved it.

—— SARAH VAUGHAN, bestselling author of THE ANATOMY OF A SCANDAL

A shrewdly layered thriller that unflinchingly tackles the quagmire of pressure, judgement and ever-present danger women navigate in their daily lives

—— Herald Scotland

Powerful and moving, I read The Body Lies in one sitting. As a thriller, it grips and shocks: as a portrayal of the way women move through the world, and the way men see them, it has never been more timely. Absolutely stunning.

—— ERIN KELLY, bestselling author of HE SAID/SHE SAID

A story of female response to male threat, boosted by questions of literary expression... Baker's fans will enjoy the crisp descriptive writing and insightful nuances

—— Kirkus Reviews

All too plausible, Baker’s powerful tale is at times heart-rending to read—and impossible to put down.

—— Publishers Weekly

The beauty and structure of Baker's language, the way she decided to tell this particular story, the suspense... It has stayed in my head for days.

—— Jamie Southern, Bookmarks, NC

The Body Lies is so much more than just a thriller. It's a literary analysis on the way that our social environment shapes creative writing and individual voice; a heartfelt depiction of assault-related trauma and the associated anxiety and depression; an incisive commentary on the constant, subtle ways that women's consent is invalidated. And on top of all that it's a riveting, compelling murder mystery, intensely readable.

—— Genevieve Taylor, Boulder Bookstore, CO

Jo Baker makes a huge departure in style with this menacing story of a student and teacher. A young college instructor begins to see entirely too much of herself in the work of one of her writing students who claims to only "write the truth." As the threats become more overt, the stakes increase until it becomes unclear who will triumph in this game of cat and mouse. This nail biter of a novel will leave readers deeply unsettled and checking the door locks.”

—— Pamela Klinger-Horn, Excelsior Bay Books, Excelsior, Minnesota

Baker’s powerful tale is at times heart-rending to read—and impossible to put down.

—— Publishers' Weekly US

Beyond the twists and turns of the thriller, The Body Lies also stands out for its careful examination of the role of women, both in these thriller novels and within society, making this book a powerful and unnerving read with thrills that run much deeper than your average surface shocks ... Impossible to put down.

—— Culturefly

Baker's layered and sharply observed writing feels authentic from the first . . . Moving beyond boundaries to divine the essence of what it is to be a woman navigating life in modern-day Britain.

An essential book for our times . . . this is a thrilling, gripping read

—— Tales Before Bedtime

There is tension, drama and sense of jeopardy aplenty

A timely and powerful literary thriller which makes for a thought-provoking and unsettling read

—— Amanda Duncan, My Bookish Blogspot

Offers a really interesting perspective on how women are represented in life

—— Varietats

It is insidiously unnerving in such a clever way . . . had me well and truly hooked!

—— Bookish Chat

Dark, unforgiving, suspenseful and thought-provoking

—— Emma's Bookish Corner

Campus novel satire and the high drama of a thriller combine in a fiendishly readable interrogation of the allure of violent fiction

—— SARAH MOSS, Guardian

One of the most believable heroines I've seen on the page in a long time. The final chapters deliver the heart-in-mouth genre denouement we’ve been waiting for
