Perfume

'Witty, stylish and ferociously absorbing' Observer

Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is abandoned on the filthy streets of eighteenth-century Paris as a baby, but grows up to discover he has an extraordinary gift: a sense of smell more powerful than any other human's. Gradually he learns how to exploit this gift in the art of creating the most sublime perfumes in France. Yet there is one scent he cannot capture: the scent of an innocent young virgin. In order to perfect his experiments, he must have this final ingredient, at any cost. A cult international bestseller, Perfume is a bewitching, darkly humorous fable of desire, obsession and death.

Reviews

Donna Leon’s appreciation of her adopted city’s sublime yet fragile magnificence is as fresh (and invigorating) today as it was when Death at La Fenice was published in 1992. However, her anger at the damage caused by tourism and pollution has grown stronger over the years ... Should anyone still doubt that Leon is a superb novelist, let them consider the scene in which Guido gently questions a woman during the last few minutes of her life. You can feel the tension, fear, horror - and wonder.

Coben’s USP is how families are torn apart by secrets. He is a clever plotter, too, always pulling the rug from under your feet.

Harlan Coben is a master at weaving compelling thrillers, but even by his high standards, The Boy From the Woods sounds like a haunting ride.

—— POP-SUGAR

Harlan Coben rose to worldwide attention recently for his hit Netflix show The Stranger. Many of you would have already been familiar with his work prior to this. Harlan Coben’s back catalogue is very impressive. We’ve read pretty much every Harlan Coben novel and let us tell you, he never lets you down. If you’re looking for a meaty thriller which is equal parts surprising and well-written, look no further.
