Sherlock Holmes: The Valley Of Fear

’It is the Valley of Fear, the Valley of Death. The terror is in the hearts of the people from the dusk to the dawn. Wait, young man, and you will learn for yourself’. Sherlock Holmes is intrigued and disturbed when he receives an ominous coded message: a Mr Douglas of Birlstone House is in terrible danger. Before Holmes can act, shocking news arrives. Douglas has been founded dead – his face blown off by a shotgun. Scotland Yard is stumped. Was this suicide or murder? But Holmes is in no doubt. Reviews

These crime novels have enjoyed a cult following, thanks to Fowler's writing which has been compared to Agatha Christie and Ben Aaronovitch. A cracking summer read.

—— STYLIST MAGAZINE

Bryant and May series... is witty, charming, intelligent, wonderfully atmospheric and enthusiastically plotted.

—— Marcel Berlins , The Times

This quirky series, which describes the Peculiar Crimes Unit and its elderly stars, Bryant and May, does include macabre and horrifying passages, but they are rendered almost cheerful by the wit and humour of the writing... if you like oddities, this series is a very good example.

—— The Literary Review

Excellent... an atmospheric, exciting story... the information about forensic medicine is as instructive as Patricia Cornwell's

The story-telling is little short of brilliant

Perfect plotting, great characterisation, and the kind of payoff that a thriller of this calibre deserves

I'm all for hearing different voices in fiction and I got my wish with this book. The story showed just how someone with Asperger's might view the world. Christopher finds a dead dog and sets about trying to find the dog's killer, but the book is much more than a mystery story... I loved the way Christopher tries to bring order to his world by using Maths which he finds far easier to understand than people

—— Malorie Blackman , Books for Keeps

So genuine...It is chillingly heartbreaking and passionately positive in equal measure

—— Julia Eccleshare , Books for Keeps

So what makes these different to any other set of classics? In a moment of inspiration Random House had the bright idea of actually asking Key stage 2 children what extra ingredients they could add to make children want to read. And does it work? Well, put it this way...my 13-year-old daughter announced that she had to read a book over the summer holiday and, without any prompting, spotted The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas...and proceeded to read it! Now, if you knew my 13-year-old daughter, you would realise that this is quite remarkable. She reads texts, blogs and tags by the thousand - but this is the first book she has read since going to high school, so all hail Vintage Classics!
