The Snow Leopard

'A beautiful book, and worthy of the mountains he is among' Paul Theroux

'A delight' i Paper

This is the account of a journey to the dazzling Tibetan plateau of Dolpo in the high Himalayas. In 1973 Matthiessen made the 250-mile trek to Dolpo, as part of an expedition to study wild blue sheep. It was an arduous, sometimes dangerous, physical endeavour: exertion, blisters, blizzards, endless negotiations with sherpas, quaking cold. But it was also a 'journey of the heart' - amongst the beauty and indifference of the mountains Matthiessen was searching for solace. He was also searching for a glimpse of a snow leopard, a creature so rarely spotted as to be almost mythical.

Reviews

A beautiful book, and worthy of the mountains he is among

—— Paul Theroux

What began as a practical search for the rare snow leopard, revered Buddhist emblem, developed into a quest for the meaning of Being. An enjoyable combination of mountaineering and mysticism

—— Observer

It's a tale of an inner struggle for calm, and would be an inspiring and sustaining desert island companion

—— Emily Barr

As much the chronicle of an inner journey as it is the learned recording of an unfamiliar territory...a timeless account

This short collection of writings has something to offer for avid admirers of his work and new Rovelli readers alike

—— Science Focus

It remains rare for even the most talented science writers to fuse their work with a deep knowledge of the arts. One such rarity is Carlo Rovelli who, like some intellectual throwback to antiquity, treats the sciences and the humanities as complementary areas of knowledge and is a subtle interpreter of both. . . These finely wrought essays draw on an impressive hinterland of cultural and scientific learning. . . an entertaining and enlightening journey

—— Andrew Anthony , Observer

Rovelli opens windows onto the imagination for all of us

—— Antony Gormley

Carlo Rovelli, one of our age's most inspiring thinkers, offers intellectual adventures for the curious

—— Time Out

Carlo Rovelli is a genius and an amazing communicator... What I love about his writing is that it always comes back to people -- people interacting with other people, who are interacting with their world. This is the place where science comes to life

—— Neil Gaiman

Carlo Rovelli's imaginative rigour, his lively humour and his beautiful writing are inspiring

—— Erica Wagner

Illuminating, thought-provoking and suffused with a passion for knowledge and ideas, it is an eclectic and far from conventional science read or gift

—— New Scientist, Books of the Year

Rovelli is a masterful short story teller... this book is a joy to read

—— Physics Education

A wonderfully discursive and pertinent book that stands as a celebration of the life of the mind and the gifts of an open curiosity

—— Hisham Matar

A lovely, haunting novel about a troubled woman’s quest to follow the last surviving Arctic terns on their southerly migration. As she tries to make peace with the ghosts of her painful past, she must choose whether she herself wants – or deserves – to survive, in spite of everything she, and all humans, have destroyed and lost

—— Ceridwen Dovey, author of In the Garden of the Fugitives

Beautifully haunting... Spanning oceans and decades, Franny's physical and emotional journeys are at times devastating and, at others, surprisingly, undeniably hopeful... Brimming with stunning imagery and raw emotion, The Last Migration is the incredible story of personal redemption, self-forgiveness and hope for the future in the face of a world on the brink of collapse

—— Jennifer Oleinik , Shelf Awareness

Transfixing, gorgeously precise...[The] evocation of a world bereft of wildlife is piercing; Franny's otherworldliness is captivating; and her misadventures and anguished secrets are gripping

I always find with Carlo Rovelli's books that there are moments when you get a real hit of understanding -- a jigsaw in your mind that just falls into place

—— Robin Ince

Helgoland is a wonderful guide to the most extraordinary story in physics. It will reset your view of the universe

—— Marcus du Sautoy

Hooked me so hard I read the entire book in one sitting. And then twice more

The old, solid world, if you believed in it at all, breaks into a glorious shimmer of limitless potential

—— Brian Morton , Tablet

Rovelli has an uncanny knack for instilling wonder and explaining complex theories in plain, entertaining ways

—— Irish Times

I'm keen for everyone to read Helgoland: a wonderfully lucid and poetic account of the foundations of quantum physics. It combines a compelling history with Rovelli's own intriguing - and for me very appealing - views about the basis of all things
