Author:The Voice,Lenny Henry
Launched at the 1982 Notting Hill Carnival, The Voice newspaper captured and addressed a generation figuring out what it meant to be Black and British. Written for and by Black people, the newspaper shone a light on systematic injustices as well as celebrating Black Britain's success stories.
From hard hitting news reports covering the murder of Stephen Lawrence to championing the likes of Sir Lewis Hamilton and Idris Elba, the newspaper has campaigned, celebrated and educated people for the last forty years.
As well as celebrating amazing successes in sport, politics and the arts, The Voice documented everyday life in the community, from the emergence of a Black middle class in the '90s and the achievements of Black entrepreneurs to how different facets of the community were explored in contemporary music and literature.
Since its small beginnings in Hackney, The Voice has also become a fantastic training ground for prominent journalists and figures including former politician Trevor Phillips, broadcaster Rageh Omaar and writer Afua Hirsch. Today, The Voice is Britain's longest running and only Black newspaper.
Told through news reports, editorials and readers' personal letters, this emotive book documents the social history of Black Britain over the last four decades. Each chapter is illustrated with amazing newspaper pages from The Voice's extensive archives as well as iconic and dramatic front covers from 1982 to the present day.
With a foreword from Sir Lenny Henry and written by former and current Voice journalists, this powerful book is a celebration of the ground-breaking paper which gave a voice to the voiceless.
A beautiful book. Her writing is just so dynamic and alive
—— Bernardine EvaristoIt is a fascinating book, both for [Barbara Blake Hannah's] vivid descriptions of her new life in Britain . . . and for the painful recollections of the racism she faced . . . Wide-eyed wonder jostles with a vitriolic anger - sometimes in the same paragraph
—— The TelegraphA short, punchy, eloquent statement from such a distinguished historian
—— Fintan O'Toole , The GuardianCambridge professor Tombs offers a fine first draft of history in this objective explanation of how and why Brexit happened. Tombs takes a witty, engagingly ironic approach to the false claims of Project Fear.
—— Summer reading , The TelegraphA rare intellectual proponent of Brexit, Robert Tombs infuriates pro-Europeans-even more so because of his undeniable calibre as a historian ... This Sovereign Isle argued that the Leave vote was inevitable as well as rational: the UK never fitted the European project. He understands this as a reaction to the traumas of the continent's story - traumas that Britain's distinctive journey has sometimes ducked ... His theme - national identity in a fracturing world - has contemporary significance far beyond these shores.
—— The world’s top 50 thinkers, 2021 , Prospectadmirably independent-minded and well argued ... should indeed be made compulsory reading for all Brexiteers
—— Richard Evans , New StatesmanTo Remainers interested in reading a civilised & learned defence of Brexit, I highly recommend it
—— Tom HollandA thumping great study by a heavyweight academic historian
—— Robbie Millen , The Times, *Books to Look Out For 2022*A clear, incisive account of the way in which the British maintained public order in the colonies through 'lawful lawlessness'... An exceedingly valuable book on the dark side of the British Empire
—— Wm. Roger Louis, Editor-in-Chief of Oxford History of the British EmpireLegacy of Violence is a formidable piece of research that sets itself the ambition of identifying the character of British power over the course of two centuries and four continents... this history could not be more timely
—— Tim Adams , ObserverLegacy of Violence...is deeply researched... a powerful, compelling read
—— Rana Mitter , Financial TimesFascinating... [Legacy of Violence] is a harrowing read, and one that brings the violence of empire sharply into focus
—— Alex von Tunzelmann , BBC History MagazineVividly written... [Elkins] brings together...episodes in order to draw out what she sees as their commonalities in British imperial doctrine
—— John Darwin , Times Literary Supplement[Elkins'] magnum opus... Elkins' achievement is to chronicle how makeshift responses to rebellion evolved into a chillingly standardised playbook for the use of force
—— Erik Linstrum , History TodayLegacy of Violence is beautifully written and follows through on its arguments doggedly... This is an important book that deserves to be read by everyone who wants to understand and argue against the current attempt to reinvigorate the romance of the British Empire
—— Socialist WorkerA dark, riveting book... her [Elkins'] method is what gives the book its intensity
—— New Statesman, *Books of the Year*Fascinating... a real page-turner... the writing is backed up with considerable academic research... the evidence of systematic oppression, presented as powerfully and relentlessly as it is here, will be difficult to resist
—— Literary ReviewNot so much a history book as a book of historical significance
