PI John Craine has come to Hale Island to get away from it all - the memories and the guilt, and a past that just won't let go.
But within hours he stumbles across the dead body of a young girl on the beach. When the police arrive the body has inexplicably disappeared. Or - in his already tormented state - did Craine imagine it in the first place?
Determined to get at the truth, Craine starts asking questions. But it seems no one on the island is talking. And all too soon he finds himself tangled up in a deadly network of fear and violence.
Someone has a dark secret to keep, and Craine is getting in the way...
At the nasty bits, you feel like someone coming across a meat-cleaver in a cot
—— John CareyThis is a beautifully written book with a sophisticated plot, rich in both action and atmosphere . . . this could well be Rozan's break-out book
—— Publishers Weekly (starred review)A tremendously satisfying book
—— Chicago TribuneA reader would be hard-pressed to find a more likable or more disparate duo than the middle-aged, rawboned, moody and sarcastic Smith and the 20-something, small, agile and quick-witted Chin
—— Los Angeles TimesAs usual, it's a fast-paced, rip-roaring ride. Great characters, intricate plotting, and an exotic locale, beautifully described - Who could ask for anything more? This is definitely a don't-miss book in a don't miss series
—— Booklist (starred review)Shuttling between oracular Chinese apothegms and steadily mounting action, Rozan ladles out the complications with a generous hand, yet keeps everything clear. Tough to top

—— MeMyBooksandIWitches are the new black. This is the first in a best-selling Swedish trilogy and it's one you will not want to miss out on... An epic holiday read, it's got a fantastical, interwoven narrative that is just what you need to take you all the from the airport departure lounge to a shady spot beside the pool.
—— www.sugarscape.comThis book was one of those that I just couldn’t put down, and despite its size I found it to be a really quick read. The characters were all so different and yet still fit together in their own way, and I was truly shocked by some of the events. I loved the fact that the book wasn’t too teenage despite taking place in a high school, as the characters have genuine problems to overcome with each trying to find their own way to cope with their powers. A great read, I’m really looking forward to book two!
